Unique Sculptural Jewelry and Art by Mechelle J. Fox
-
Sculptural flowers are the main feature of one line of my work
Polymer clay cabochons with a dichroic finish serve as the base of most of my floral pieces.
-
Along with spirals, swirls and coils.
These elements derived from forms found in nature appear in almost all of my work, but especially in my floral pieces.
-
Steampunk takes many forms, from the elaborate...
This bird features gears at the wing joint, goggles with mica as the lens and a spring as the feet.
-
To ones jazzed up a bit...
Just a few gears as fins and a metal element around the eye modify this seahorse to have a Steampunk feel.
-
To even simple creatures from the Deep.
What could evoke the works of such authors as Jules Verne better than fantastical deep sea creatures?
-
Fantasy creatures abound.
This necklace includes chips of opals in the flames of the nest as well as in the phoenix itself in addition to finely detailed feathers and my signature spiraling details.
-
Especially Dragons!
Fancy Dragons...
Each dragon has its own style. Here details made from polymer clay and beaded ornamentation work together to create a balanced little sculpture.
-
Feathered Dragons...>
This might be a dragon found in the South American rain forests. The feathered wings made me think of the Mayan headdresses.
-
And shy ones too.
Not all of my dragons have polymer clay details added. Sometimes just the patterning in the clay itself is enough ornamentation such as on this little one.
Why Polymer Clay?
Polymer clay is a man-made sculpting medium with the color already in it. That means I can place just the color I want where I want it while I am sculpting, not as an added finish afterward. Color mixing allows me to create almost unlimited colors and blends. That is not to say that I do not use added color where it will enhance the design. A patina of acrylic paint or a touch of mica powder may be just the thing to finish off a piece.
Why Eclectic?
Take a look through my portfolio and you will see a wide variety of styles. I have broken them down into three main galleries: Floral, Steampunk, and Fantasy, but these are really only the broadest of divisions. Most of my work is sculptural jewelry, but you can also find small wall hangings and other decorative objects.
Want More?
In addition to my artwork, I also have created a special blend of dichroic mica powders that are available to artists for their own work. These Dazzling Dichros powders are like dichroic glass where the color seen depends on the viewing angle.
